191 Sudanese slaves freed

WASHINGTON, Nov. 18 (UPI) -- Black Sudanese slaves have been freed through the joint efforts of Christian Solidarity International and the Arab-Dinka Peace Committees, CSI announced.

The liberation took place earlier this month at Warawar and Manger Ater in southern Sudan.

The 191 freed slaves, mainly women and children, had been captured during what CSI described as Sudanese government-sponsored raids against black African villages in Southern Sudan. They had been forced to serve Baggara Arab masters living in Northern Sudan, especially Darfur and neighboring Kordofan.

CSI urged the U.N. Security Council at its meetings in Nairobi Thursday and Friday to order the government of Sudan to halt all raids against black African communities, and to emancipate and repatriate -- with compensation -- all enslaved women and children.

CSI also called on the Security Council to impose an oil and arms embargo against the government of Sudan and to establish an international tribunal for Sudan for the prosecution of those responsible for slavery and other related crimes against humanity.
