LONDON, Nov. 13 (UPI) -- Britain's Conservative Party has fired Boris Johnson as shadow arts minister amid allegations about his private life, a party spokesman said Saturday.
The spokesman said Johnson was fired for lying about claims he had an affair with a journalist, not because of the claims themselves.

Party leader Michael Howard fired Johnson over the phone Saturday.
"I am very sorry this decision has been taken in response to tabloid stories about my private life," Johnson said.
