Mistrial in Williams' sister murder trial

COMPTON, Calif., Nov. 10 (UPI) -- California officials were meeting to decide whether to retry the two men accused of killing the half-sister of tennis stars Serena and Venus Williams.

The Williamses half-sister, Yetunde Price, was killed in September 2003 by gunshots fired at the sports utility vehicle in which she was riding in Compton, Calif.

A mistrial was declared Tuesday in the murder trial of Robert Edward Maxfield, 24, after jurors said five of them voted to convict, six thought Maxfield was innocent and one couldn't decided, KABC-TV, Los Angeles, reported.

That result comes four days after a mistrial in the case against Aaron Michael Hammer, 25, in another California court. Jurors in that murder trial, had voted 9-3 for acquittal.

Authorities claim Hammer shot Price with a handgun but prosecutors also said the shot that killed the woman was fired by Maxfield from an assault rifle.

A spokeswoman for the Los Angeles district attorney's office said no decision had been reached on retrying Maxfield and Hammer but meetings had been planned to discuss the charges.

Price, 31, was the mother of three children and owned a beauty shop. She also worked as an assistant to Serena and Venus Williams.
