Georgia gets second GOP senator

ATLANTA, Nov. 3 (UPI) -- Johnny Isakson easily defeated Rep. Denise Majette, D-Ga., giving Georgia two Republican senators for the first time in its history.

Isakson, one of the founders of the modern Georgia Republican Party, won the seat Tuesday being vacated by maverick Democrat Zell Miller, who is retiring, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported Wednesday.

Isakson, a three-term Congressman from Cobb County near Atlanta, drew nearly 60 percent of the vote and will join Sen. Saxby Chambliss, R-Ga., in the Senate.

"In the end, this is our country, and it's owned by the voters of Georgia," Isakson said. "Tonight they have spoken. Tomorrow I'm going to go back to work and I promise you I will give you what I have always given you, 150 percent effort. And I'll never fail you for lack of effort."

Isakson, 59, focused his campaign on support for the war on terror and President Bush's tax cuts.
