UNITED NATIONS, Oct. 27 (UPI) -- Nobel Peace Prize laureate Elie Wiesel and interfaith leaders Wednesday told U.N. Secretary General Kofi Annan the conflict in Sudan amounts to "genocide."
"It's a slow motion genocide," Tony Kireopoulos, a leader from the National Council of Churches, told reporters at U.N. World Headquarters in New York. "All of us here would agree. We think it is unfolding, that it is happening as we speak."
Said Wiesel, "People are dying day after day ... we feel not enough is being done."
The Christian, Jewish and Muslim leaders spoke with Annan, on behalf of the Save Darfur Coalition, an activist group dedicated to mobilizing the international community to try and end the bloodshed in Sudan.
The leaders also said they told Annan they want the United Nations to publicize the conflict's daily and aggregate death toll in order to increase public awareness of the carnage.
