Burk calls on Coors to resign Augusta

WASHINGTON, Oct. 26 (UPI) -- Women's group coalition head Martha Burk has asked U.S. Senate candidate Peter Coors to resign his membership in the all-male Augusta National Golf Club.

Beer heir Coors is running for the seat of Sen. Ben Nighthorse Campbell, R-Colo., who is retiring after his current term ends.

"As a potential member of the United States Senate, Mr. Coors has an obligation to denounce discrimination," said Martha Burk, chairwoman of the NCWO, in a statement. "Holding membership in a club that openly and proudly bars women from membership sends a message that sex discrimination is not serious, and indeed that it is something to brag about."

In a letter sent to Coors Brewing, the NCWO also reminded Coors U.S. Treasury Secretary John Snow resigned his Augusta National membership when he was nominated for the cabinet post.

The National Council of Women's Organizations has asked all elected officials, past and present and regardless of party, to resign their memberships in discriminatory clubs.
