Peru asks Japan to extradite ex-president

TOKYO, Oct. 17 (UPI) -- Peru has again asked Japan to extradite former Peruvian President Alberto Fujimori, but sources have said Japan is unlikely to grant the request.

Officials from the Peruvian Embassy in Japan said they asked for the extradition of Fujimori to face charges of illegally paying $15 million in state funds to Vladimiro Montesinos, former chief of the Peruvian government intelligence office, Mainichi Daily News reported.

The Japanese government refused a similar request in July 2003 when the Peruvian Embassy filed for the handover of Fujimori, who has both Peruvian and Japanese ancestry.

Japan has told the Peruvian government Fujimori would not be extradited due to his Japanese nationality.

Peruvian law enforcers have charged Fujimori with more than 10 crimes.

He has reportedly been considering a bid for the 2006 Peruvian presidential election.
