Markey denounces 9/11 reform bill

WASHINGTON, Oct. 8 (UPI) -- A senior Democratic House member Friday blasted the passage of what he called a "flawed bill" to implement the Sept. 11 commission recommendations.

Rep. Edward J. Markey, D-Mass., is a senior member of the House Homeland Security Committee.

In a statement, Markey said, "Of the 41 recommendations made by the 9/11 commission, the House Republican bill fails to implement 30 ... and adds more than 50 extraneous provisions that were not included."

Friday's House action followed Thursday night's rejection of a Democratic substitute amendment, which would have replaced the legislation with a bill passed by the Senate on a 96-2 vote.

"This House bill makes a mockery of the 9/11 commission's recommendations," Markey said. "This bill fails to implement most of the commission's recommendations. And in a blatant disregard of the commission's recommendations ... it added extraneous provisions which actually would facilitate the outsourcing of torture."

The House vote on the GOP bill attracted some Democrats, passing 282-134.
