Kerry gains on Bush in Post poll

WASHINGTON, Oct. 7 (UPI) -- U.S. Democratic nominee John Kerry has gained ground on President Bush since last week's presidential debate, a Washington Post poll indicated Thursday.

In the survey, taken Sunday through Tuesday night, Bush leads Kerry 49 percent to 47 percent among those most likely to go to the polls. Independent Ralph Nader received 1 percent of the vote, while 3 percent of voters remain undecided. Among all registered voters, Bush holds a three percentage-point lead.

A total of 1,481 registered voters, including 1,155 likely voters, were interviewed. The margin of error for both samples is 3 percentage points.

One in eight current Bush and Kerry supporters say there's a chance they could switch allegiances before Election Day, a proportion that hasn't changed significantly in weeks, the newspaper said.

Interest in the presidential campaign remains quite intense, with half of all registered voters saying they're following the race "very closely." Four years ago, just 30 percent of all voters were paying similar attention to the campaign in early October.
