Libya joins Iraq hostage release efforts

TRIPOLI, Libya, Oct. 6 (UPI) -- Libya's Gadhafi International Charity Association said Wednesday they are working with Sunni tribal leaders in Iraq to obtain freedom for a British hostage.

An official source in the association, which is headed by the Libyan leader's son, Seif al-Islam Gadhafi, told UPI that it "is in constant contact with the brother of the British hostage and is deploying unabated efforts with Fallujah's tribal leaders to secure the release of the captive."

"Despite our big efforts we have not achieved any tangible result yet," the source said, noting that the kidnappers of Kenneth Bigley did not ask for any ransom for his release.

Seif al-Islam Gadhafi said in recent comments to the media that his association is "mediating the release of Bigley" and that the coming few hours "will be decisive" for his fate.

The association runs a charity hospital in Fallujah and provides major humanitarian assistance to the residents of the city, a hotbed for Sunni insurgents opposed to the U.S.-led foreign military presence in Iraq.
