SIALKOT, Pakistan, Oct. 1 (UPI) -- A suspected suicide bomber attacked a mosque in east Pakistan Friday, killing at least 16 worshippers, the BBC reported.

The mosque was packed with minority Shiites when the bomb exploded, officials said.

Besides the 16 confirmed dead, dozens were reported injured in this latest outbreak of intra-Islamic violence that has marred relations between the Shia Muslim community and the majority Sunni Muslim community.

The blast comes just days after security was stepped up in major Pakistani cities in fear of reprisals for the killing by Pakistani security forces of leading al-Qaida suspect Amjad Farooqi.
