Sessions, Frost exchange charges in Texas

DALLAS, Sept. 30 (UPI) -- Republican Pete Sessions and Democrat Martin Frost called on each other Thursday to return donations in one of the Texas' hottest congressional races.

Sessions first urged Frost to return donations to a now-canceled fundraising appearance by folk singer Peter Yarrow or give the money to a charity that helps abused children.

Frost canceled the Yarrow's appearance at an Oct. 11 event after learning the singer had pleaded guilty to molesting a 14-year-old girl more than 34 years ago.

As an author of the federal Amber Alert and anti-child abduction legislation, Frost said it would be inappropriate for Yarrow to appear at the event on his behalf.

Frost said he found Sessions "hypocrisy appalling" and he urged the Republican to return a $10,000 contribution from U.S. House majority leader Tom DeLay's political action committee.

Three of the Republican house leader's aides have been charged in Texas with violating state campaign finance laws, but DeLay has not been charged in the case.

Frost's campaign said donors who bought tickets to the Oct. 11 concert can still attend the event or two other fundraisers, request a refund, or dedicate their contribution to the defeat of Sessions.
