Man sought in Detroit day care shootings

DETROIT, Sept. 28 (UPI) -- A 3-year-old girl died and two adults were wounded when a man entered a licensed day care center Tuesday in Detroit and started firing a semiautomatic weapon.

The Detroit Free Press reported two adults were wounded during the morning shootings. A 7-month-old boy who was apparently dropped while being held by one of the adults suffered minor injuries, but a third adult, and two other children were unharmed.

"Words were exchanged. Shots were fired," said Detroit Police Chief Ella Bully-Cummings. "It appears as though this was not random. We don't have any specific information right now."

The Free Press said the unidentified injured adults, a 41-year-old woman and a 22-year-old woman, were hospitalized in critical condition.

A K-9 unit was searching for the shooter, described by police as a black man in his 20s carrying a blue steel semiautomatic weapon.
