The Guardian reported the Monday fight started during a procession to mark the discovery in 327 of the True Cross -- the cross believed to be the one upon which Jesus was crucified.

A Greek Orthodox cleric said Roman Catholic Franciscans left their chapel door open and that action was seen as disrespect and the fight started between priests and worshippers at the doorway dividing Orthodox and Franciscans, a police spokesman said.

The site, where six Christian denominations guard rights laid down in an Ottoman law of 1757 to separate parts of the Romanesque building, has been the scene of numerous disputes.
