Coast Guard makes record drug busts

MIAMI, Sept. 27 (UPI) -- The Coast Guard said in Miami Monday it has made its largest drug seizure in history, bringing the total for fiscal 2004 to a record level.

Adm. Thomas H. Collins announced the Coast Guard also made its third largest seizure last week.

He said the two seizures from two fishing vessels, the Lina Maria and San Jose, southwest of the Galapagos Islands off Ecuador, totaled 56,397 pounds of cocaine.

The seizures were made by Coast Guard Law Enforcement detachments deployed on U.S. Navy vessels.

The haul for the year now totals 240,518 pounds of cocaine, worth about $7.7 billion.

"Vastly improved intelligence sharing, more coordinated operations with our enforcement and intelligence partners, and better resources meant our cutter and aircraft crews are increasingly finding themselves in the right place at the right time, with the right capabilities to detect and intercept any threat," Collins said.
