Fujimori skimmed more than $167 million

LIMA, Sept. 24 (UPI) -- Former Peruvian President Alberto Fujimori skimmed more than $167 million from the federal budget, a government commission determined Friday.

The money allegedly came from military and police pensions during a 10-year period ending in 2000.

Peru has sought Fujimori's extradition from Japan for years, without success since Japanese citizens -- Fujimori has duel Peruvian and Japanese citizenship -- cannot be sent abroad to face criminal charges.

Fujimori has been in self-imposed exile in Japan since fleeing his homeland in November 2000 after being toppled in a corruption scandal.

In March, Peru called for Fujimori to serve a 30-year prison sentence on charges that he ordered the murder, kidnapping and torture of his political opponents. More specifically, prosecutors accused him of ordering 25 people killed by the La Colina paramilitary death squad during 1991 and 1992.

Despite some Peruvians desire to see him incarcerated, Fujimori said earlier this week he was planning another presidential run in 2006.
