LONDON, Sept. 24 (UPI) -- Yusuf Islam, once the rock singer Cat Stevens, has told legal advisors to investigate his denial of admission to the United States, Sky News reports.
Islam was on the way to Washington earlier this week when his commercial flight was diverted to Bangor, Maine. After questioning, Islam was deported to Britain.
"We have now initiated a legal process to try to find out exactly what is going on, and to take all necessary steps to undo the very serious, and wholly unfounded, injustice which I have suffered," Islam said in a statement.
Federal officials say that Islam's name was on a security watch list.
The incident has angered Muslim groups in both Britain and the United States and sparked a protest from the British government. Foreign Secretary Jack Straw told Secretary of State Colin Powell that the action was not needed and "should not have happened."
