Peru asks Fujimori's return

UNITED NATIONS, Sept. 22 (UPI) -- Peru's President Alejandro Toledo urged Japan Wednesday to return former leader Alberto Fujimori so he can be tried on charges relating to his time in office.

"International judicial cooperation plays a crucial role in the access to justice," Toledo said in his address to the U.N. General Assembly. He added Fujimori would get "a fair trial and the guarantees of a process under the rule of law."

Fujimori, who was president in Peru from 1990-2000, resigned following a corruption scandal. He has been indicted for "responsibility on actions of torture, forced disappearance and executions."

The former president has denied any wrongdoing.

Toledo also highlighted his fears of a global divide that is affecting the governance in both international and national levels.

"It is unified in the areas of production, trade, finance and in the digital revolution of information and communication technology, but divided by the increase of conflicts, civil strifes, transnational terrorism as well as cultural and ethnic violence," he said.
