Okada re-elected as opposition leader

TOKYO, Sept. 14 (UPI) -- Katsuya Okada, leader of the main opposition Democratic Party of Japan, was re-elected Monday at the party convention in Tokyo.

"My only mission, my biggest mission is to achieve a change in government in the next Lower House election," 51-year-old Okada proclaimed as he accepted the new two-year term as party president.

He stressed the need to win at least 170 seats to form a majority in the Lower House by fielding party candidates in all 300 constituencies by March.

The party endorsed its new leadership, including Acting President Hirohisa Fujii and Secretary-General Tatsuo Kawabata. Policy Research Council Chairman Yoshito Sengoku remains in his post.

Meanwhile, Ichiro Ozawa, who emerged as the party's most influential figure after the Upper House election in July, declined any leadership post, reported the Asahi Shimbun Tuesday.
