WASHINGTON, Sept. 8 (UPI) -- A copy of the New York Post that predicted wrongly that Dick Gephardt would be John F. Kerry's running mate will be immortalized at the National Press Club.
Early editions of the Post published on July 6, the day Kerry picked Sen. John B. Edwards, D-N.C., as his running mate included the front page headline, "KERRY'S CHOICE: Dem Picks Gephardt as VP Candidate."
The National Press Club, located in Washington, D.C., said it would have the issue framed and would hang it in the bar, near its framed copy of American journalism's most famous front page blunder: The November 1948 post-election early edition of the Chicago (Ill.) Daily Tribune that screamed in a banner headline, "DEWEY DEFEATS TRUMAN."
Rick Zimmerman, the curator of the NPC's Page One collection and former Washington bureau chief of The Cleveland Plain Dealer, told the New York Daily News that the Dewey headline is currently the only error in the club's collection.
Of the 13 copies being offered on eBay, the online auction site -- some of which, the News said, were paired with the Post's next day correction -- had no bidders, in contrast to the value of its predecessor. "Depending on condition, the 'Dewey Defeats Truman' paper can sell for between $500 to $800," said Lee Lundquist, of HistoryBuffAuction.com. "The error edition of the New York Post will probably never have any great value, possibly $3 to $6," he told the News.
