N. Korean defectors seek asylum in China

BEIJING, Sept. 5 (UPI) -- People believed to be North Korean defectors have been moved to the Japanese Embassy's main compound in Beijing, an embassy official said Sunday.

The group of 29, including three children, forced their way into a Japanese school on embassy grounds last week seeking asylum, the Kyodo news agency reported Sunday.

Japanese officials transferred the group Saturday night to a conference room where officials said the accommodation was larger.

They have told Japanese officials that they had come from North Korea and they want to go to South Korea. An embassy official said interviews aimed at confirming the identities of the defectors were continuing.
