Philip Thomas named consul-general in NY

NEW YORK, Aug. 30 (UPI) -- The British government has named Sir Philip Thomas as the consul-general in New York, replacing Sir Thomas Harris, the BBC reported Monday.

Thomas is the director-general of U.K. Trade and Investment in the United States, responsible for the promotion of British exports throughout the United States and for securing investment by U.S. firms in the United Kingdom.

He had previously held posts in Washington, Europe, the U.K. Mission to the European Union in Brussels and as the British High Commissioner to Nigeria.

Thomas, a graduate of Dulwich College and Cambridge University, joined the British Diplomatic Service in 1972 and has served in the Cabinet Office and the Foreign and Commonwealth Office.
