British arrest Abu Hamza on terror charges

LONDON, Aug. 27 (UPI) -- British authorities re-arrested a radical Muslim cleric already facing extradition to the United States on terrorist charges.

Abu Hamza al-Masri, the 47-year-old former imam of Finsbury Park mosque in London, was arrested at Belmarsh prison where he is being held pending extradition hearings on an earlier terrorism charge, the Times of London reported Friday.

He was then moved to the high-security cells at Paddington Green police station.

If Britain formally charges al-Masri, his trial would take precedence over any extradition decision and 11 charges lodged by U.S. authorities.

The cleric's next scheduled appearance in his fight against extradition is scheduled for October.
