Muslim cleric arrested in Britain

LONDON, Aug. 26 (UPI) -- Muslim cleric Abu Hamza al-Masri, awaiting extradition to the United States, was arrested in Britain Thursday on suspicion of terrorism.

He was arrested at a prison in southeast London, where he is being held while he fights extradition to the United States, the BBC reported.

British authorities are questioning Abu Hamza regarding the commission, preparation or instigation of acts of terrorism alleged to have occurred in Britain.

If British charges are brought against him, those will take precedence over the U.S. extradition proceedings, the report said.

The United States wants Abu Hamza on charges of giving advice to those involved in a Yemen kidnapping in which three Britons died in 1989.

Other allegations include attempting to set up a terrorist training camp in Oregon and sending someone to Afghanistan to fight for the Taliban.

Abu Hamza's attorneys claim he will not get a fair hearing if extradited to the United States.
