BAGHDAD, Aug. 23 (UPI) -- The Iraqi government sent a special envoy to London to inquire about the health of Iraq's highest Shiite authority, Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani.

Official Iraqi television said Secretary General of the Council of Ministers Zouheir Abdel Ghani visited al-Sistani in a London hospital where he underwent heart and eye surgeries.

"The envoy relayed to al-Sistani the government's wishes for speedy recovery and safe return to Iraq," the television said.

Al-Sistani left Najaf for England earlier this month just before fighting broke out between U.S. forces and Shiite gunmen led by radical cleric Moqtada Sadr.
