ISLAMABAD, Pakistan, Aug. 15 (UPI) -- Pakistan claimed Sunday to have foiled a plot to assassinate senior Cabinet ministers and bomb public places during Independence Day celebrations.
Pakistan celebrated its 57th anniversary of independence from Britain, Saturday.
Pakistani officials told reporters in Islamabad they learned about the plot from two terror suspects arrested recently.
Pakistan's state news agency reported that security forces had nabbed a "number of potential terrorists" in raids throughout the country.
Quoting senior government officials, the report said the terrorists had planned large-scale terrorist attacks on the Independence Day.
Information Minister Shaikh Rashid Ahmed confirmed the arrests, but gave no further details.
