'70s murder reclassified as 1880s death

JEFFERSON COUNTY, Ky., Aug. 12 (UPI) -- The unsolved '70s homicide of young black Kentucky girl has finally been resolved -- as a 19th-century burial.

In 1988, state medical examiner forensic anthropologist David Wolf concluded a set of bones discovered in Jefferson County were evidence of the murder of a black girl age 10 to 15. But last week Emily Craig, who now holds the same position in the medical examiner's office, sent a letter to the Jefferson County Coroner's Office after she concluded the girl was actually an adult who had been buried in the mid to late-1880s, the Louisville Courier-Journal reported Thursday.

Wolf, who died in the early '90s, said "construction debris" found among the bones enabled him to date the death to the '70s, but Craig and other experts have decided the debris is actually the remains of a coffin. Craig recommended the remains be reburied.
