Navy carrier jet missing off Japan

SAN DIEGO, Aug. 11 (UPI) -- A search was under way off Japan Wednesday for a Navy jet that disappeared with four crewmembers aboard.

The Navy, in a statement said the SB-3 Viking was part of a San Diego-based carrier squadron involved in exercises near the island of Iwo Jima when contact was lost at 7:42 Tuesday night PDT.

The plane was flying from the carrier USS John C. Stennis. American and Japanese units were searching for the aircraft approximately 600 miles south of the Japanese mainland.
