Egyptian newspaper blasts president's son

CAIRO, Aug. 1 (UPI) -- An independent Egyptian newspaper Sunday blasted Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak's eldest son, Gamal, in an unusual criticism of the president's family.

Al-Masri al-Yawm, in a commentary, accused Gamal Mubarak of entering political power without the endorsement of the people.

It said Gamal's "political attempts disregard the feelings of the people, who neither want him nor betting their money on him."

The paper said the "problem with Gamal Mubarak is that he chose to be above the people, not with them, to ride and not to serve, and to take, not to give. He should reconsider his position and take permission from the masses before starting over."

Gamal Mubarak recently assumed a high position in the ruling National Democratic Party that determines the government's political and economic strategies and supervises their implementation.

Despite President Mubarak's repeated denials that he was preparing Gamal to eventually take over the leadership of Egypt, critics believe he could reach the helm through the platform of the ruling party and government.
