Ugandan rebels under investigation

KAMPALA, Uganda, July 29 (UPI) -- The world court has begun an investigation into the war crimes allegedly committed by a Ugandan rebel group known for its brutality.

Among the allegations are that the Lord's Resistance Army, led by Joseph Kony, abducted some 20,000 children, and turned the boys among them into fighters and the girls into sex slaves, the BBC reported Thursday.

The Ugandan army said Wednesday it had captured four of Kony's wives and many of his children in a rebel camp in southern Sudan but Kony escaped.

"We are investigating any crimes committed in northern Uganda after July 2002. We have the full support for this from the authorities in Uganda," said International Criminal Court prosecution spokesman Christian Palme.

The LRA has been terrorizing the population of northern Uganda for nearly two decades.
