UAE president sponsors Palestinian

AMMAN, Jordan, July 25 (UPI) -- The United Arab Emirates said Sunday its president, Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan al-Nahyan, was paying for the treatment of a Palestinian official.

The UAE Embassy in Amman issued a statement saying Zayed instructed the mission to take responsibility for the medical treatment of Palestinian legislator and former information minister Nabil Amr in Jordan.

Amr was shot and injured last week by unidentified gunmen at his home in the West Bank town of Ramallah. He was transferred to Amman where doctors removed bullets and bullet remnants from his leg.

The Palestinian Embassy said Amr flew Sunday to Germany to continue his medical treatment.

No one claimed responsibility for the attempted assassination of Amr, who refused to accuse any party for the attack, which he said was aimed at stifling his calls for reforms within the Palestinian Authority.
