New AIDS cases reported in Yemen

SANAA, Yemen, July 25 (UPI) -- Yemeni medical sources said Sunday four new AIDS cases were reported during the past week, including three Yemenis and one African woman.

Hussein Faqira, coordinator of the Anti-AIDS Program, said in a statement the infected woman, whom he said was from the Horn of Africa and residing in Yemen, will be deported, as is the Yemeni custom in dealing with foreigners infected with the virus.

He said a total of 12 cases were reported during the first six months of this year, in addition to the four new cases discovered last week.

Official estimates said there were approximately 13,000 people infected with AIDS registered in Yemen, half of whom are non-Yemenis due to the regular influx of refugees from the Horn of Africa, estimated at 130,000 people.

Official reports have said prostitution is widespread in the African refugee camps and accuse women refugees of spreading the disease outside the camps into Yemeni cities and towns.
