Poll: Kerry has 2-1 Hispanic advantage

WASHINGTON, July 22 (UPI) -- Hispanic voters in the United States favor Democratic Sen. John Kerry by a 2-1 margin over incumbent George Bush, the Washington Post reported Thursday.

The survey of 1,605 registered Latino voters was sponsored by the Post, the Univision Spanish-language television network and the Tomas Rivera Policy Institute, an independent think tank, and found Kerry claimed support from 60 percent of all Latino registered voters in the 11 states surveyed.

Bush had 30 percent, 2 percent supported independent Ralph Nader, and 8 percent were undecided.

Latino voters surveyed were sharply critical of the war in Iraq, with 63 percent saying the war was not worth fighting, a view shared by slightly more than half of all voters nationally.

The findings suggest Bush is falling short of his goal of notably improving on the 35 percent share of the Hispanic vote he received four years ago, although his advisers told the newspaper they believe he is still on track to do so.

In national polls, Bush and Kerry have been running neck and neck for the past several weeks.
