Firm spies on Brazilian government

BRASILIA, Brazil, July 22 (UPI) -- A U.S. consulting firm has been accused of spying on the Brazilian government including high-ranking ministers.

The Folha de Sao Paulo newspaper reported Thursday that the Kroll consulting firm was originally reported to have been contracted by the Brazilian investment firm Opportunity to investigate Telecom Italia. Opportunity has been battling with Telecom Italia to wrest control of Brasil Telecom, one of the nation's largest telephone companies.

Minister of Communications Luiz Gushiken -- one of the subject's of Kroll's investigation -- called the alleged spying "flagrant disrespect for (Brazil's) constitution."
