DENVER, July 21 (UPI) -- Former U.S. President Bill Clinton says he questions the timing of allegations his former security adviser Samuel Berger mishandled classified documents.
Clinton told the Denver Post he has known about the federal probe of Berger's actions for several months, calling this week's news a "non-story."
Berger has admitted to the FBI he removed some documents from the National Archives while doing research for his submission to the Sept. 11 panel on the Clinton administration's anti-terror activities and policies.
"We were all laughing about it on the way over here," Clinton said of the publicity. "People who don't know him might find it hard to believe, but ... all of us who've been in his office have always found him buried beneath papers."
Saying he would like to know who leaked the probe to the media, Clinton went on to point out the story broke just a week before the Democratic National Convention begins in Boston.
