WASHINGTON, July 20 (UPI) -- The Women's Edge Coalition launched a nationwide effort Tuesday aimed at getting 1 million U.S. women involved in helping their sisters worldwide.
"It's a nationwide effort to motivate American women to tell their elected officials and active candidates what they are going to do to help and invest in women around the world," Rita Sharma, executive director of the Women's Edge Coalition, told a Washington news conference.
Sharma said the goal is to get 1 million women involved in the crusade. She called on women to attend local town hall meetings and talk with their elected officials.
"Just ask questions," she said. "A simple question can change how the candidates think about the issues, to let people know that American women around the country care about this enough to ask the candidates and ask elected officials what they're doing about it."
The Coalition is made up of 40 non-governmental organizations and 15,000 individuals. It advocates for international economic politics and human rights that support women in ending poverty.
