Tribe leader killed in Yemen violence

SANAA, Yemen, July 15 (UPI) -- A prominent tribal leader and many of his followers reportedly were killed in fighting in Yemen against a rebel religious leader wanted by the authorities.

Military and tribal sources told UPI Thursday Sheik Mohammed Jaber Janhadam and his followers were killed in battles in Saada near the Yemeni-Saudi border in the fighting that has been going on for almost a month between government forces and partisans of Hussein Badreddine al-Houthy, a former legislator and anti-U.S. Muslim activist.

Al-Houthy, who is leading a rebellion against the authorities, is believed to be hiding in a cave on the rugged mountain of Maran in Saada. He is accused by the authorities of preaching anti-U.S. activities and terrorist attacks against American targets.

Witnesses in the embattled region said the residents are living a tragic health situation with bodies rotting in the streets.

The Yemeni army chief of staff Maj. Gen. Mohammed Ali al-Qassimi said the army is in control of Saada and preparing a final assault on al-Houthy's hideout which he said was delayed due to the rugged nature of the region.
