Clinton: Blair did best he could with Iraq

LONDON, July 14 (UPI) -- Former U.S. President Bill Clinton said British Prime Minister Tony Blair did the best he could with flawed intelligence on Iraq, the BBC reported.

"You can second-guess Blair if you like but ... the intelligence was not what it should have been ... but at the time, nearly everybody thought that there was probably a stock of chemical and biological weapons there and that it was vulnerable to falling into the wrong hands," Clinton said in a BBC radio interview.

"Your intelligence was apparently more aggressive than ours," Clinton said, referring to British-sourced claims included in a crucial State of the Union address by President George Bush about Iraq seeking uranium in Niger.

Clinton called on the British public to recall how hard the Blair government had worked to bring the United States toward a U.N. resolution on Iraq and its then-feared weapons of mass destruction.

He also said U.N. weapons inspector Hans Blix should have been given more time to report.

Clinton's remarks came as a British inquiry published scathing criticism of Britain's intelligence, saying it contained serious flaws.
