Bell: Investigate alleged DeLay-Enron ties

WASHINGTON, July 14 (UPI) -- U.S. Rep. Chris Bell, D-Texas, asked the House Ethics Committee Wednesday to expand the probe he initiated into House Majority Leader Tom DeLay, R-Texas.

In a letter to the committee, Bell urged the committee to examine what he called documents that could, "provide new information as to Mr. DeLay's involvement in illegal and unethical activities."

The letter, which Bell said was not a formal addition to his earlier complaint, cites a report that appeared in The Washington Post that charged former Enron lobbyists had advised the company chairman that DeLay was seeking contributions for his political action committee and that some of the money would be spent on a project to redraw congressional districts in Texas.

Bell previously alleged that two political action committees connected to DeLay directed corporate dollars into 2002 Texas state legislative races, something not permitted under state election law.

"I hope the committee fully explores Mr. DeLay's Enron connection before taking action on the complaint," Bell, who was defeated in his bid for re-nomination in a redrawn congressional district, said.
