U.N.: Fresh attacks in W., S. Sudan

UNITED NATIONS, July 8 (UPI) -- A U.N. spokeswoman says bandits have attacked civilians and humanitarian workers in the violence-wracked Darfur region of western Sudan.

This was coupled with reports of attacks in southern Sudan.

Marie Okabe told reporters at U.N. World Headquarters in New York officials were concerned about attacks by highwaymen on humanitarian convoys bringing relief to at least 2 million people affected by the year-long conflict between the Sudanese Government, allied militias and two rebel groups, the rebel Sudan Liberation Army and the Janjaweed militias, which are supported by Khartoum.

At the same time the U.N.'s Integrated Regional Information Networks reported deadly attacks in southern Sudan late last month by Ugandan rebels of the Lord's Resistance Army.

"The reports we got indicate that the LRA attacked people in the villages and in the fields. They (the LRA) killed many of them," a relief worker told IRIN, adding the dead numbered more than 100.
