Security tightened around Israel's Sharon

JERUSALEM, July 7 (UPI) -- Israel's intelligence service tightened security around Prime Minister Ariel Sharon Wednesday amid fears of violence from right-wing Jewish extremists.

The measures came as a result of news from Shin Bet chief Avi Dichter Sharon could be in danger by those opposed to the evacuation of settlements in Gaza, The Independent said.

Attorney General Menachem Mazuz called for a meeting of intelligence and law enforcement officials to discuss ways of containing the extremist threat, including prosecutions under the criminal law of incitement.

Threats to resist any evacuation have grown since Sharon, until recently hailed on the far right for his association with settlement-building, decided to go ahead with the Gaza plan despite losing a May referendum among Likud party members.

While no concrete threat has been made against Sharon, politicians clearly recall the 1995 extremist assassination of Yitzhak Rabin, who went much further than Sharon in seeking to bring about a lasting peace settlement, the newspaper said.
