Taiwan considering Warren-type commission

TAIPEI, Taiwan, July 5 (UPI) -- Taiwan's President Chen Shui-bian is considering setting up a special committee to monitor the inquiry on the assassination attempt on his life.

"The president's resolve remains unchanged, he cannot violate the constitution by interfering in the operations of the government's investigative task force, which is organized by members of the judiciary and the police," said Presidential Office Deputy Secretary-General James Huang.

"However, to meet public expectations of learning the truth, the president has accepted the suggestion that a number of prominent people join a non-official committee to monitor the government task force."

The Taipei Times reported Monday that the president wants to set up an impartial, neutral investigative committee like the Warren Commission, which investigated the 1963 assassination of U.S. President John F. Kennedy.

There was an assassination attempt March 19 on Shui-bian and Vice President Annette Lu.
