Israel: East Jerusalem Arabs key challenge

JERUSALEM, July 5 (UPI) -- The head of Israel's security service is warning that East Jerusalem Arabs are a major, and increasing, source of terrorists.

Avi Dichter, head of Shin Bet, said four of every 1,000 East Jerusalem Arabs aged 17 to 45 are directly involved in terror, the Jerusalem Post reported Monday.

He also said that east Jerusalem Arabs share the same ideology as West Bank Palestinians. They are being targeted by the terrorist organizations for recruitment, he said, because of the mobility they enjoy by virtue of their Israeli ID cards and license plates.

With the growing security fence making it more difficult for Palestinians to infiltrate Israel, the value of east Jerusalem Arabs to the terrorist organization will only increase, Dichter said.

He said that while suicide attacks in Jerusalem accounted for 20 percent of all suicide attacks in 2001, this year they might account for 60 percent of the attacks.
