GOP calls Dems hypocrites in Nader dispute

TALLAHASSEE, Fla., July 1 (UPI) -- The Florida Republican Party has accused the state's Democrats of hypocrisy by scrutinizing Ralph Nader's efforts to get on the presidential ballot.

"Democrats are quick to use the issue of voter disenfranchisement to their benefit and yet have no problem unleashing their legal sharks on Ralph Nader," said GOP state Chairman Carol Jean Jordan in a statement.

Florida Democratic Chairman Scott Maddox said the party only wants to be absolutely sure that Nader qualifies, The Miami Herald reported Thursday.

"This isn't part of any huge concentrated effort, it's making sure he abides by the law, which should not be an unreasonable request," Maddox said.

Democrats have accused Republicans of helping Nader get on the ballot.

Nader's presence on the ballot in 2000 is credited with taking votes away from the Democrats and helping President Bush defeat Democrat Al Gore.

Nader is not currently on any ballot in the United States, but he has been endorsed by the National Reform Party.
