WILMINGTON, N.C., June 29 (UPI) -- A Wilmington, N.C., jury Tuesday awarded $435,000 to a woman who was artificially inseminated with the wrong sperm.

"I'm very excited that the jury was so courageous, and we hope that this will never happen to anyone else again," Kelly Chambliss said after leaving a New Hanover County courtroom moments after the damages were announced, WECT Channel 9 reported.

Chambliss became ill in August 2002 after being mistakenly injected with leftover sperm from another woman's insemination procedure, potentially exposing her to a host of blood-borne diseases, including AIDS.

A judge found the Coastal Area Health Education Center guilty of medical malpractice on Feb. 5.
