Green party snubs Ralph Nader

MILWAUKEE, June 27 (UPI) -- The Green Party of the United States snubbed Ralph Nader during the weekend, nominating longtime party activist David Cobb at its convention in Milwaukee.

The New York Times reported Sunday that although Nader did not seek the Green Party's presidential nomination, he asked the party not issue any nomination and then endorse his candidacy.

However, some Green party members were unhappy being called a spoiler party -- some Democrats blame Nader's candidacy for costing their candidate the election, in 2000.

Many Green party members at the convention were so eager to not become a spoiler, they pushed for a campaign strategy of having their presidential candidate actively campaign only in states where a Republican or Democratic victory is assured.

Essentially, Cobb has adopted that strategy and he said he would campaign for himself in only the 40 states he considered "safe." In states where he might have had some influence, he said he would ask voters to let their consciences guide them.

The suggestion has been interpreted by Nader's campaign as permission to vote for the presumptive Democratic nominee, John Kerry.
