Report: Rowland ignored bid-rig evidence

HARTFORD, Conn., June 23 (UPI) -- Connecticut Gov. John Rowland ignored evidence of bid-rigging state legislators found while investigating whether to impeach the three-term governor.

Rowland, who this week announced he would resign effective July 1, has been under investigation by federal authorities and state legislators, with the latter group due to deliver a recommendation on whether Rowland should be impeached.

Authorities are looking into allegations that Rowland improperly accepted gifts from companies doing business with the state.

While the impeachment question is moot with Rowland's resignation, the Hartford Courant reported Wednesday the legislative committee found evidence of bid-rigging involving the construction of the Connecticut Juvenile Training School. The evidence, the newspaper said, included improper meetings a member of Rowland's staff had with a representative of the company that built the $57 million training school.

The final committee report will not say whether it had enough evidence to suggest Rowland, a Republican, be impeached but will be released once Rowland leaves office.
