Kerry, Sharpton stump in Motown

DETROIT, June 18 (UPI) -- Former U.S. Democratic presidential hopeful Al Sharpton campaigned with presumptive party nominee Sen. John Kerry at a Detroit event that raised $1 million.

Kerry and Sharpton met with AFL-CIO union leaders and members of the city's large Arab-American community, the Detroit Free Press reported Friday.

Michigan Gov. Jennifer Granholm also attended the event.

"During the primaries, there was one person who consistently was always there, keeping the peace and the compass going in the right direction, and that was Al Sharpton," Kerry told a $1,000-a-ticket fundraiser at the Renaissance Center.

It was the first time the New York-based African-American minister has campaigned with Kerry since he suspended his own campaign after Kerry won enough delegates to clinch the nomination at July's Democratic National Convention in Boston.

Kerry's plans for a two-day Michigan campaign swing were curtailed by the death of former President Ronald Reagan and Thursday's celebration for the NBA champion Detroit Pistons.
