Blood reported on alleged slayer

MIAMI, June 18 (UPI) -- Classmates at a Miami middle school said suspected killer Michael Hernandez returned to class after the death of a classmate with blood on his clothes.

Court records released Thursday say a student told detectives that Michael Hernandez, 14, told the teacher he "got pushed by people and he got a bloody nose," The Miami Herald reported Friday.

Circuit Judge Henry Leyte-Vidal has scheduled a competency hearing for Aug. 19 to determine whether Hernandez can stand trial for the slaying of Jaime Gough, also 14.

Gough's throat was slashed in a boy's restroom at Southwood Middle School Feb. 3.

Hernandez is charged as an adult and if he is convicted will serve a mandatory sentence of life in prison.

Defense attorney Richard Rosenbaum told the judge this week that "Hernandez is mentally ill and not competent for trial.

Two court-appointed specialists have already determined the boy is competent to stand trial.
