Opposition leader slain in Pakistan

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan, June 17 (UPI) -- Pakistan's opposition Thursday demanded a judicial inquiry into the assassination of a politician in the southern port city of Karachi.

Munawwar Suharwardi, a close confidante of former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto, was gunned down in a commercial area earlier Thursday as he was parking his car.

In a television interview Bhutto, who lives in exile, demanded judicial inquiry saying, "We do not trust the government. They have failed miserably in maintain law and order in the country."

"Two gunmen on a white car fired several shots at Mr. Suharwardi and fled," said city police chief Tariq Jamil.

Suharwardi, 44, hit by three bullets, flagged down an auto rickshaw but died on his way to a nearby hospital from excessive bleeding.

Angry workers of Bhutto's Pakistan People's Party torched two shops and several vehicles near the hospital. They also threw stones at vehicles in an attempt to stop the traffic.

Karachi, Pakistan's largest city and commercial capital, has been plagued with ethnic and religious violence and civil strife. Targeted killing of prominent religious and political figures is also common.
